Setting a hostname doesn't solve any problem, other than human readability - which shouldn't play a factor when you're dealing with a lot of devices. So, if OP has complete access to devices as he/she hands them out, then the obvious thing to do is take note of the MAC address and implement something that will let him/her know that the MAC belongs to the company (whether it's via IPAM, DHCP reservations, or some other method). OP is looking to differentiate between devices that they hand out and devices that they didn't hand out. I don't think there's anything to solve here.
